To understand Artesia, look beyond one shopping street. The city’s Portuguese community has helped shape its agricultural past and its traditions of gathering, music and celebration.
A place to keep traditions alive.
Artesia D.E.S. was founded in 1927 to preserve and celebrate Portuguese traditions. Its name refers to Divino Espírito Santo, or Divine Holy Spirit. The organization’s own history connects its beginnings with Holy Family Catholic Church and the first local Festa do Divino Espírito Santo.
Today, the Portuguese Hall remains a place where community life comes together. The D.E.S. band, soccer club and cultural activities connect generations through shared participation.
Visit with an invitation to learn.
Look for a publicly announced event on the D.E.S. website. A community gathering can provide a richer introduction than stopping by an event hall on an ordinary day.
Connect the wider story.
Arrange a visit with the Artesia Historical Society to learn more about local families, daily life and the city’s evolution. Its museum and historic district offer another lens on the community around you.
